From the first time I saw Whaam! I always envisioned the planes should have been from the “Stop that Pigeon” cartoon. Years later, I scratched that itch, which was what started me off in the Mighty Rhubarb direction. Bringing the Roy Lichtenstein fine art history into a new contemporary art variant.
Of course, this work is instantly recognisable, given that it is one of the most iconic works by the pop art movement. As the most famous of Lichtenstein’s comic book paintings, it was originally shown at the Leo Castelli gallery in 1963 and, since 2006, has been on permanent display at the Tate Modern gallery.
